Alimentación del pez limón, Seriola lalandi (Valenciennes, 1833 in Cuvier y Valenciennes, 1833) en aguas bonaerenses OceanDocs
Vergani, M..
The yellowtail kingfish, Seriola lalandi, Carangidae (Valenciennes, in Cuvier y Valenciennes, 1833) is a pelagic, schooling fish, with gregarious behaviour. It is a circumglobal species from tropical and temperate waters. Adult S. lalandi migrate to Argentine waters (SW Atlantic) during summer months (January-April). They have been reported from Argentine waters in depths of 20-36 m between 36°S and 38° and, as reported elsewhere in the world, are often associated with rocky reefs. Samples of S. lalandi were caught using trolling lines during daytime around rocky reefs at 35° 52'-35° 58'S and 54° 45'-54° 48'W, on February 15-22, 2002. Sixty-six adult S. lalandi were analyzed, with specimens measured (LT) and weighted (WT). The length-weight relationship...

Análisis espacio-temporal del estado nutricional de larvas de anchoíta Engraulis anchoita. Relación con las características hidrográficas y la disponibilidad de alimento OceanDocs
Díaz, M.V..
Nutritional condition studies allow the assessment of physiological state of each larva and thus, the establishment of favourable nursery areas which provide better survival and growth. In the present work, morphometrical, histological and biochemical techniques were employed to assess nutritional condition of anchovy, Engraulis anchoita, larvae captured in the Argentine Sea. Its results were complemented with oceanographic data and information about zooplankton abundances, both prey and predators of anchovy larvae. Anchovy larvae abundance and distribution would be mainly determined by physico-chemical variables. Even though no significant differences were found in larval nutritional condition among the studied areas, larval condition was slightly better...

Anthropogenic disturbance on nursery function of estuarine areas for marine species ArchiMer
Courrat, A.; Lobry, Jeremy; Nicolas, D.; Laffargue, Pascal; Amara, R.; Lepage, M.; Girardin, M.; Le Pape, O..
Estuaries serve as nursery grounds for many marine fish species. However increasing human activities within estuaries and surrounding areas lead to significant habitat loss for the juveniles and decrease the quality of the remaining habitats. This study is based on the data of 470 beam trawls from surveys that were conducted in 13 French estuaries for the purpose of the European Water Framework Directive. It aimed at testing the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on the nursery function of estuaries. With a multispecific approach based on ecological guilds, two fish metrics, abundance and species richness of Marine juvenile migrant fishes, were used as proxies for the estuarine nursery function. Indices of heavy metal and organic contaminations were...

Características ambientales, reproducción y alimentación de la merluza (Merluccius hubbsi)y la anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita)en su habitatreproductivo patagónico. Síntesis y perspectivas OceanDocs
Sabatini, M..
Fish recruitment seems to be influenced by environmental variability;the plankton would act as a link between both processes. While environmental variability can be explained in terms of physical forcing, recruitment variability is partly determined by the survival of early larvae. In this review, the available information on hydrography and plankton in relation to reproduction and feeding of hake (Merluccius hubbsi)and anchovy (Engraulis anchoita)in the Patagonian Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic spawning ground was summarized and integrated. The objective was to assess what is actually known about the environmental and planktonic features of the region that may have an effect on the recruitment of both species. In the Patagonian spawning ground, detection, in...

Coupling hydrodynamic and individual-based models to simulate long-term larval supply to coastal nursery areas ArchiMer
Rochette, Sebastien; Huret, Martin; Rivot, Etienne; Le Pape, Olivier.
For many marine fish species, recruitment is strongly related to larval survival and dispersal to nursery areas. Simulating larval drift should help assessing the sensitivity of recruitment variability to early life history. An individual-based model (IBM) coupled to a hydrodynamic model was used to simulate common sole larval supply from spawning areas to coastal and estuarine nursery grounds at the population scale in the eastern Channel on a 14-yr time series, from 1991 to 2004. The IBM allowed each particle released to be transported by currents from the hydrodynamic model, to grow with temperature, to migrate vertically giving stage development, and possibly to die according to drift duration, representing the life history from spawning to...

Distribución de huevos, larvas y prerreclutas de merluza (Merluccius hubbsi) en la Zona Común de Pesca Argentino-Uruguaya. Período 1999-2001 OceanDocs
Machinandiarena, L.; Brown, D.R.; Ehrlich, M.D.; Pájaro, M.; Dorado, J.; Teso, V..
Distribution and abundance of eggs, larvae and prerecruit stages of Merluccius hubbsi were evaluated to examine spawning, nursery and settlement areas in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone during the 1999-2001 period. Larvae and prerecruit stages were more abundant at stations from 50 m to 100 m depth. The nursery area would extend from the 50 m isobath south of 37° S to the 200 m isobath northward where the shelf becomes narrower. In the whole sampling area small size prerecruits were caught; therefore, the whole zone should be considered as a potential settlement area.

Early postlarval fish in the hyperbenthos of the Dutch Delta (south-west Netherlands) OMA
Beyst, B.; Mees, J.; Cattrijsse, A..
Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37...

Effects of age and environment on the summer mortality in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas during the first two years ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Boudry, Pierre; Soletchnik, Patrick; Bedier, Edouard; Ropert, Michel; Samain, Jean-francois.
Three successive generations were produced between 2001 and 2003 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for survival in juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas. For each generation, two groups were selected for their high ("R" for resistant) and low ("S" for susceptible) survival. Significant differences in mortality were observed during the first year in Riviere d'Auray (RA) (Brittany-France). However, low and similar mortality were observed for both groups, with no significant difference between groups in the first and second generation in this site, where the first summer is the critical, sensitive period with a clear age effect. In Baie des Veys (BDV) (Normandie-France), where mortalities usually mainly affect adults, mortality between groups,...

Estudio de la condición nutricional de larvas de la población bonaerense de anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita) en relación con las características hidrográficas del área de crianza OceanDocs
Díaz, M.V.; Pájaro, M..
The study of larvae nutritional condition allows to assess the physiologic state that reflects the environmental situation they were exposed to. It represents a useful instrument to determine favourable nursery areas, provides tools for the management of a population subject to fishing and furnishes information to establish appropriate closed areas and periods. The material analyzed derived from three cruises carried out to assess Argentine anchovy Northern stock during the 2003, 2004 and 2006 reproductive peak (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The objective of this work was to study the nutritional status of Argentine anchovy first feeding larvae caught in the coastal and mid-shelf of the Río de la Plata River maritime front in relation to the...

Functional gains of including non-commercial epibenthic taxa in coastal beam trawl surveys: A note ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Rouyer, Armelle; Martin, Jocelyne.
The development of ecosystem-based indicators requires the broadening of a view of the community, from fish species to all the species (macrobenthic and fish) correctly captured by a given sampling gear. Many scientific surveys already have such integrated databases. The present note aims to demonstrate that existing databases, herein from dedicated coastal nursery surveys, are actually underexploited. Such databases contain information on non-commercial taxa, which could greatly improve our knowledge on the organisation and functioning of coastal ecosystems. Using two datasets, a "complete" dataset composed of commercial and not-commercial epibenthic trawled species (fish and invertebrate) and a "subset" dataset characterized by commercial and routinely...

Our knowledge for the distribution of Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) in the Mediterranean Sea is limited and fragmented. In the current work habitat suitability modeling was applied to summer acoustic surveys data of Atlantic mackerel juveniles derived from the north part of the Mediterranean (i.e., acoustic data from the Gulf of Lions, pelagic trawls held during acoustic surveys in Spanish Mediterranean waters, south Adriatic Sea, Strait of Sicily, and North Aegean Sea) using generalized additive models (GAMs) along with satellite environmental and bathymetry data. Bathymetry along with sea surface temperature and circulation patterns, expressed through sea level anomaly and the zonal component of the absolute geostrophic velocity, were the...

Impact du milieu sur les nourricieres de poissons plats de la Baie de Seine ArchiMer
Duval, P.
This study has two objectives: (1) the knowledge of spatial and temporal characteristics of flat fish nursery grounds, and, (2) the determination of natural or man-induced factors affecting these nurseries: hydrodynamics, sediment properties, predation, competition, water quality, pollution. To protect these grounds the author proposes a fisheries management plan and an impact study before all port installations or all coastal equipment use.

Relative contributions of different sole and plaice nurseries to the adult population in the Eastern Channel: application of a combined method using generalized linear models and a geographic information system ArchiMer
Riou, Philippe; Le Pape, Olivier; Rogers, Stuart I..
The Eastern Channel (ICES division 7d) is considered a unit for stock management of the common sole Solea solea and the plaice Pleuronectes platessa. At this scale, the aim of this work is to model the juvenile distribution of these flatfish. The database used, based on different surveys undertaken during the two last decades, includes 4500 coastal beam trawl hauls throughout the Eastern Channel coasts. Multivariate analyses are used to study the interannual fluctuations in flatfish recruitment of the region. This approach allows us to separate the Eastern Channel into homogeneous sectors with regard to these fluctuations. The physical parameters that contribute to the observed juvenile sole and plaice distributions are identified and their distributions...

Simulating fish larval drift helps assess the sensitivity of recruitment variability to early life history. An individual-based model (IBM) coupled to a hydrodynamic model was used to simulate common sole larval supply from spawning areas to coastal and estuarine nursery grounds at the meta-population scale (4 assessed stocks), from the southern North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (Western Europe) on a 26-yr time series, from 1982 to 2007. The IBM allowed each particle released to be transported by currents, to grow depending on temperature, to migrate vertically depending on development stage, to die along pelagic stages or to settle successfully on a nursery, representing the life history from spawning to metamorphosis. The model outputs were analysed to...

Temperature and salinity interannual variations are analyzed south ofthe hake (Merluccius hubbsi)spawning grounds area, in the San Jorge Gulf and adjacent waters Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic. The study period comprises the months of January 1995-2000. Results of cruises carried out on board of INIDEP research vessels to assess hake juveniles were studied. Statistically significant increase of temperature from 1997 was observed. Change trends over a period of 20 years at a global climate scale are discussed. Mean salinity did not show variations except for 2000 when it was slightly higher probably due to the scarce influence of the Patagonian Current in the area. Temperature and salinity fields showed a horizontal gradient south of the Gulf (thermohaline...
